Desktop wants Internet else no no to work

I have this odd problem in my computer. It refuses to work offline. It gets really slow and sort of crawls. I tried my best to fix it by tweaking some settings but of no help. This happens only with the linux OS which I prefer.

I am usually pretty comfortable with my computer and able to find solutions to the problems some way or the other. But this one has been bothering me for a long time now. I am not a geek, neither I am into CS. I tried using google with the keywords - ubuntu, offline, slow, system. And I get results which are totally unrelated to my problem. I do not blame the search engine though. May be I am not able to convey my problem correctly.

Two weeks ago I decided to sell my desktop which has only linux OS. FC6. Yeah it is pretty old but very stable and was running smoothly on my 256 mb RAM machine. I put an advertisement on the mailing list and this guy turned up and says he's interested. But the catch is - he wants windows to be installed. To make him happy I got a 'working' CD ROM to do the needful. The system doesn't like it. It simply says no. Damn. I decided to go with my good-old-happily-running FC6 only. Let someone else come who can buy the comp as-is-where-is.

For now, if there is anyone who knows the solution to this offline-system-slow problem, please leave a message in the comments section. Will get in touch with you soon.

**Update**
Found this crack. At the start up, login with a super user id or root and type this command

/etc/init.d/network stop

It works well.. and when you have internet connection then you can start your network back by this command

/etc/init.d/network restart
